Dear all,
I’m excited for our Swimming in Style gathering tomorrow, 11:00 am, Pacific Time. We’ll analyze an unforgettable paragraph from Stoner by John Williams. The novel has been a “perfect novel,” which made me curious. What makes it perfect?
This paragraph provides some clues. The sentences are brimming with style. They open up a discussion about using imagery to create subtext and pacing. This particular paragraph is full of revelatory dialogue, and so we can discuss synecdoche and subtext, two techniques that help us remember that dialogue is a part of the whole. Finally, I’ll talk again about the microstructure of a paragraph.
