Dear all,
Swimming in Style in June 2025!
Tomorrow, June 21st, we’ll gather on Zoom at 11:00-12:30 Pacific Time and draw inspiration from Jamel Brinkley’s short story, “No More Than a Bubble,” from his collection, A Lucky Man.
If you’re new to our Zoom gathering, we look closely at a published work and write practice sentences, using the techniques from the text.
The paragraph opens in media res and the sentences are overbrimming with style. You’ll practice blending the poetic or higher register language with colloquial. You’ll feel the rhythm and flow of using a variety of sentence lengths. You’ll learn how to weave in a second literal story thread. And you’ll see how the selection of one word hauls in an allusion to folktale and myth. There will be time for questions and sharing your work.
