In the white room while the early hours seep into dawn and slither down the wall, and the fluorescents hiss like the promise of disease, and the bed strains under the weight of my hesitations, the blue nurses adjusting the pillows while I remember the wonder of your smile.
That truly is stunning. It's incredible how powerful the imagination can be - and anyone who thinks there's nothing new to write is just simply mistaken!
Thank you for the in-depth look at that beautiful sentence. Having a go at it myself:
In the wood
In the slipping afternoon, when the tree-dark shadows morph from mothers to creaking messengers of the coming night, and the chill of the evening slips inside your clothes like a silk net closing around a fish, and you see the road ahead through the edges of the tree line where it is still day yet, the way home where it is warm, still you slow your steps, not quite ready to find your way back to the fire.
At noontime with my brown bag lunch I leave the corporate cubicles to walk through the rear alleyway shortcut to reach the quiet neighborhood streets magnolia tree. Prop my back against the trunk and ponder the white flowers turning brown desiccating on a fresh Lu mowed lawn. A restful retreat where no IBM computer hums and just out of ear shot, extinguished behind buildings extension; I find solace from highway drone exhalations are erased with out sound like a teacher’s challenge screech writing on a black board.
Such a wonderful image of late love, as seen by everyone who dreams of ageing with one's beloved - and retaining their love and hand-holding, despite the dribbles, connected by decades and ice-cream.
And since I'm in the asking mode ... I'd love an index note to all the gorgeous sentences you've already published in this newsletter. Sometimes I find myself scrolling through the archives to find one I remember had caught my eye and an Index note would make that so much easier. It seems such a pity that some great sentences with your gorgeous analysis get lost in the backlog otherwise! You've given so much value over 2 years!! Thank you so much for your work!
Here's my try:
