Beautiful writing. But am I crazy to wish that sometimes, or maybe most of the time, could we just leave some of these beautiful creatures (mollusks, lobsters, squid, octopi) the hell alone? Is it possible that we are here for them as much as if not more than they are here for us?

(Forgive my ranting. Thank you, Nina.)

David,

I agree with you. I looked it up and it seems that there has to be a label if food has been irradiated. That is our primary vote of objection. To not buy the stuff.

Anyway, I love the image of a question mark snapping itself straight. Vanished! The question is answered.

We should leave them alone, and they have a purpose beyond our use of them. I like how the perspective of the oysters is possibly where the epiphany is, an understanding that cannot be undone. I've actually read the story, and the human being in the story has had trouble accepting something, but the oysters have no choice. They get there first.

The language suggests epiphany, too, with the image of light—the radiance of revelation, of truth.

Definitely. The light is it.
